Green Roof Systems

Blackdown Intensive

Blackdown Intensive green roofs offer all the features and benefits of a domestic garden or city park, providing areas for recreation and amenity. Intensive green roofs are becoming increasingly common in highly populated city centres, driven by sustainability and Sustainable Urban Drainage (SuDS) requirements, along with the need to create usable space.

The range includes drainage layers, substrates, planting, and ancillary components.

  • Increases amenity space in urban environments
  • Vegetation and planting options are bespoke to each project
  • Feature a mixture of hard and soft landscaping
  • Improves air and water quality

Green roofs require early stage decisions about access, maintenance, and intended use to ensure the design meets project expectations. Alumasc works closely with designers and specifiers from the outset to ensure every aspect of the brief is achieved.

Intensive green roofs typically incorporate a combination of hard and soft landscaping elements. These can include lawns, shrubs, and semi-mature trees, integrated with materials to create functional spaces such as pathways, walkways, seating areas, and play areas.

To support this diverse planting, a Blackdown Intensive substrate is required. This substrate contains a higher proportion of organic matter to sustain more demanding vegetation. Typical build-up depths range from 300mm to 1500mm, depending on the design intent, plant selection, and structural capacity of the building.

  • Intensive green roofs are typically specified for new build projects due to their high weight loading. These systems generally have build-up depths of 300mm to 1500mm and a saturated weight exceeding 400kg/m2.
  • Blackdown Intensive green roofs are compatible with Alumasc root-resistant waterproofing systems. These include Hydrotech MM6125 hot melt structural waterproofing, bituminous membranes from the Derbigum and Euroroof ranges, Caltech QC cold applied liquid systems, and Aluply single ply membranes.
  • Blackdown Intensive green roofs are compliant with the Green Roof Organisation (GRO) best practice standards.
  • Blackdown green roof components comply with FLL guidelines.

Warranties are available for the Alumasc waterproofing system used in the green roof build-up.
