Green Roof Systems

Blackdown Biodiverse

Blackdown Biodiverse green roofs help create new sustainable ecosystems or replace habitats lost through development. By setting clear ecological goals, such as encouraging the return of species like the Black Redstart or supporting invertebrates such as the digger wasp, Alumasc can tailor the biodiverse roof specification to meet those specific requirements. These systems are designed to recreate aspects of the local biodiversity that existed before construction of the building.

The range includes drainage layers, substrates, planting, and ancillary components.

  • Contributes to BREEAM assessment ratings
  • Comply with Biodiversity Action Plans (BAP), Urban Greening Factor (UGF) targets, and relevant local planning requirements
  • British native vegetation selections
  • Reconstruct lost habitats and support local biodiversity

Green roofs require early stage decisions about access, maintenance, and intended use to ensure the design meets project expectations. Alumasc works closely with designers and specifiers from the outset to ensure every aspect of the brief is achieved.

A wide range of plants can be incorporated into a biodiverse roof depending on the wildlife or ecological conditions the roof is intended to support. Planting typically includes plug plants, such as drought tolerant wildflowers, herbs, and grasses, alongside specialist seed mixes designed to replicate specific habitat types.

To support this diverse planting, a Blackdown Biodiverse substrate is required. The substrate is composed of recycled clean crushed bricks with a very wide granulometric distribution and a mineral based soil. By mounding the substrate and including habitat incidentals such as shelter stones, mixed aggregate piles, and partially buried logs, the completed installation becomes both visually pleasing and ecologically rich.

  • Blackdown Biodiverse green roofs support the use of native vegetation to contribute to BREEAM assessment ratings and wider biodiversity strategies, including Urban Greening Factor (UGF) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
  • Blackdown Biodiverse green roofs are compatible with Alumasc root-resistant waterproofing systems. These include Hydrotech MM6125 hot melt structural waterproofing, bituminous membranes from the Derbigum and Euroroof ranges, Caltech QC cold applied liquid systems, and Aluply single ply membranes.
  • Blackdown Biodiverse green roofs are compliant with the Green Roof Organisation (GRO) best practice standards.
  • Blackdown green roof components comply with FLL guidelines.

Warranties are available for the Alumasc waterproofing system used in the green roof build-up.
