Roofing Insulation Solutions

Roofing insulation is a key component of the building envelope, helping to improve thermal efficiency, reduce heat loss and support compliance with the energy performance requirements of Approved Document L. Available in a range of material types, thicknesses and performance grades, insulation can be incorporated into warm roof, inverted roof and hybrid roof constructions.

Working alongside our technical team, we can advise on the most appropriate insulation specification to achieve the required U-value and meet your project’s specific performance requirements.

Insulation Types

Polyisocyanurate (PIR)

PIR rigid insulation boards deliver high thermal efficiency with minimal thickness due to one of the lowest thermal conductivities (lambda) values available. Designed for use within warm roof build-ups, the boards are available with a variety of facing options compatible with torch-applied, adhered and mechanically fixed waterproofing systems.

Features:

  • Lambda value: 0.022 to 0.027 W/mK
  • Available thicknesses: 20–150mm, with pre-bonded options available
  • Upper facings: Bitumen coated glass tissue (BGT), Coated glass tissue (GTF),
    Composite foil (FF)

Mineral Wool

Stone wool insulation boards provide thermal and acoustic performance while offering non-combustible fire performance, with products achieving Euroclass A1 or Euroclass A2-s1,d0 classifications depending on type. Designed for use within warm roof build-ups, the boards are available in both single and dual density grades, with faced and unfaced options to suit the selected waterproofing application method.

Features:

  • Lambda value: 0.039 W/mK
  • Available thicknesses: 30–185mm
  • Reaction to fire: Euroclass A1 unfaced / A2-s1,d0 faced

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)

XPS insulation boards feature a closed-cell structure that delivers low water absorption and high compressive strength. Designed for use in inverted roof build-ups, the boards are loose-laid above the waterproofing membrane and held in place by the designated overburden.

Features:

  • Lambda value: 0.031 to 0.032 W/mK (design value)
  • Available thicknesses: 50–200mm
  • Rainwater cooling: Installed in conjunction with a Water Flow Reducing Layer (WFRL)

Extruded Polystyrene Plus (XPS)

XPS Plus insulation boards feature a closed-cell structure and manufacturing process to deliver an improved thermal conductivity (lambda) value over standard grade while maintaining high compressive strength and low water absorption. Designed for use in inverted roof build-ups, the boards are loose-laid above the waterproofing membrane and held in place by the designated overburden.

Features:

  • Lambda value: 0.028 W/mK (design value)
  • Available thicknesses: 70–205mm
  • Rainwater cooling: Installed in conjunction with a Water Flow Reducing Layer (WFRL)

Cellular Glass

Cellular glass insulation boards combine effective thermal insulation with high load-bearing capacity. Unfaced products achieve Euroclass A1 classification, while faced options are available to facilitate the application of the waterproofing system in warm roof constructions. Product is also available with an inorganic coating for use in inverted roof applications.

Features:

  • Lambda value: 0.036 to 0.038 W/mK
  • Available thicknesses: 50–200mm, depending on type
  • Reaction to fire: Euroclass A1 (core)

Vacuum Insulated Panel (VIP)

VIP insulation boards consist of a microporous core encapsulated within a gas-tight, evacuated envelope. They achieve significantly lower thermal conductivity compared with conventional insulation materials, making them ideal for roof applications where build-up height is limited or enhanced thermal performance is required.

Features:

  • Lambda value: 0.007 to 0.009 W/mK
  • Available thicknesses: 20–50mm
  • Installation: Typically used alongside conventional insulation to provide protection

Tapered Insulation

Designed to provide effective thermal performance while creating positive drainage falls towards roof outlets. Suitable for warm roof applications, boards are available in PIR, Mineral Wool, and Cellular Glass. Each system is tailored to the specific roof layout and drainage requirements of the project.

Features:

  • Types: Available in PIR, Mineral Wool, and Cellular Glass
  • Falls: 1:60 as standard, with 1:40 and 1:80 available
  • Reduced waste: Available pre-mitred and pre-bonded to reduce on site waste

Upstand Boards

Designed to minimise thermal bridging at roof perimeters, parapets, and other raised details within inverted roof systems. Available in both Mineral Wool and XPS, each board is supplied with a factory laminated non-combustible 6mm high-impact facing board. Overall height, reaction to fire, and aesthetic finish should be considered when selecting these products.

Features:

  • Types: Available in XPS and Mineral Wool
  • Available thickness: 56mm
  • Reaction to fire: Euroclass A2-s1,d0 classification for the complete Mineral Wool board
Euroclass A1 facing board (XPS option)
